As I have written in all the other re-releases of Frank Zappa’s catalogue, this is yet another perfect pressing and remastered from the original 1970 analog tapes. The Zappa family and Bernie Grundman and Pallas U.S.A. have again hit this out of the park.

Burnt Weeny Sandwich is in my top ten favorite albums of all time, and now I finally have a perfect pressing that sounds extraordinary. Listening to this remaster is like hearing it for the first time. The details of each instrument is so clearly separated and Frank’s guitar has never sounded better on this vinyl release. I have had a Reprise release for years and this version just blows it away. Finding a clean copy on the Bizarre label is difficult and expensive, but now you too can get a perfect copy of this album for a reasonable price that sounds exactly how it was meant to sound.

Zappa Family Trust.... please keep em’ coming. I’ll buy everything you release and keep reviewing them so other Zappa fans will get the word out. A big thank you to all involved.

This is definitely one of my favorite albums, but it was also one which after listening to a lot back in college in the 70''s somehow slipped into the back of my rotation. This 2012 reissue has renewed my appreciation of the original 1969 album, as it brings a warmth and clarity that the original (''95) CD lacked. It has a slightly longer version of the mega-classic "Little House I Used to Live In" (21:52 v. 18:46) which was part of the appeal of getting the reissue, but really doesn''t add much. That song btw, is not only classic Zappa with sublime hand spliced segues of virtuosic performances, but also includes a finale of live playing and studio manipulation that is literally out of this world, sounding like something the DMT gnomes would produce. What is noticeable however is the improved sound.

As much as I love the reissue my older CD now has been relegated to my car player where it''s been in frequent rotation for the past year, and I haven''t gotten tired of it one bit, instead appreciating it more and more! Maybe because it was mostly a studio effort (compared to "Weasels Ripped My Fresh") - like "We''re Only In It For the Money" and "Uncle Meat" which gave Frank the kind of control he excelled at, the material here is simply amazing - bookended by pop-doowop ''period pieces'' - with some of his greatest composition between - "Theme from Burnt Weeny Sandwich", "Holiday in Berlin, Full Blown", "Aybe Sea" and "Little House…" - creative modern classical masterpieces expressed masterfully by rock-jazz musicians.

Overall, this is essential Zappa, and the 2012 reissue is the definitive version to get.

This is really a super re-issue of this outstanding recording. I always have a difficult time saying whether this is my favorite from Zappa''s catalog, because Hot Rats and One Size Fits All are both serious contenders. I also have this on the original Bizarre label, and I can say this release is fantastic.

I''ve been a pretty big fan of Zappa for the last three years, but I only recently got around to buying his music on CD. Besides this, I have We''re Only in it For the Money, Apostrophe ('')/Overnite Sensation and a collection called Strictly Genteel. So why choose Burnt Weeny Sandwich over heavyweights like Freak Out, Uncle Meat, or One Size Fits All? Despite this album being essentially a collection of outtakes, it''s got plenty of Zappa classics and little to no filler. Tracks like "Little House I Used to Live In," "Aybe Sea," and of course "Holiday in Berlin" are worth the price of admission, and the two doo-wop covers "sandwiching" the album are quite nice too. A definite favorite, one that I''m happy to own now.

However , I wore out this mainly instrumental gem when I had it on vinyl , and am so pleased to find it here on CD . The music itself has not aged at all - it seems to have a timeless quality to it . If you like Zappa''s instrumental music buy this record - you won''t be at all disappointed .....

In some ways, the Mothers of Invention''s BURNT WEENY SANDWICH picks up where HOT RATS, the fusion masterpiece their leader and guitarist Frank Zappa had released under his own name a few weeks earlier, left off. Both albums feature lengthy, largely improvised instrumental tracks, and both cross musical boundaries freely. But where HOT RATS was very much an exercise in jazz/rock, WEENY tends to showcase Zappa''s modern classical influences a bit more, whether overtly (as in self-explanatory titles like "Igor''s Boogie" and "Overture to a Holiday in Berlin") or more subtly (as in Ian Underwood''s entrancing piano solo on "Aybe Sea"). Nevertheless, there''s plenty for everyone in both of these albums, and while HOT RATS is ultimately the stronger of the two WEENY is likewise a top-of-the-line offering which never disappoints.

Although the original Mothers had already disbanded by the time Zappa compiled and released WEENY in late 1969, the band''s spirit is still evident in the sometimes jarring juxtaposition of styles, the insertion of brief "interlude" pieces between longer compositions and, inevitably, the humorous touches which adorn the album. Two doo-wop covers (a real rarity in Zappa''s usually entirely self-composed musical universe), "WPLJ" and "Valarie," bookend WEENY beautifully, with Zappa proving as effective a pop vocalist as former Mother Ray Collins and bassist Roy Estrada providing a stunning falsetto on the latter tune. In between these two worthy tributes to 1950s teen culture are some far more "serious" works, most notably the eighteen-minute "Little House I Used to Live In," assembled from several studio sessions and a concert recorded in England, which features jaw-dropping violin work from Sugar Cane Harris (another hero of HOT RATS), piano fantasias from Underwood and Don Preston and - get this - an onstage organ solo by Zappa himself. The title track and "Holiday in Berlin, Full-Blown" give the leader a chance to display his guitar chops to good effect, while the various short numbers highlight different facets of his unique compositional bent. The result is an album nearly as impressive as, if somewhat less cohesive than, its esteemed predecessor, and one no fan of serious experimental music should be without.

I can not emphasize enough, my appreciation for this man''s, and this group''s work. Frank Zappa has said that the original band was good, but lacked the ability to perform his more difficult material. Combine this with the cost of touring this band, and it just did a nose-dive into the ground. It''s kind of difficult to figure what the whole story was, because Don Preston has said that Zappa complained about the the band being too big and expensive to tour, but kept adding personnel nonetheless. "Freak Out" was recorded when The Mothers existed as a five-piece, and there are at least ten musicians on this, but the end result doesn''t suffer; even though it''s left-over material, it''s top-notch left-over material. I just don''t think any of it fit into any existing format of the band''s work up to that point. The same with "Weasels Ripped My Flesh."

There''s no way to classify this set; it''s too variegated, but somehow, it all sounds like one unified piece of work. The calibre of musicianship here is, phenomenal; such a tight-sounding outfit, this material is delivered with an almost military discipline. As another reviewer said, it is "sandwiched" with two doo-wop songs, the title probably derives from that.

So once you are introduced to this piece of musical theater, and the opening fanfare is out of the way, you are taken on a musical journey that spans so many styles and textures, it almost boggles the mind, and by the time you hear the applause at the end of "Little House I Used To Live In," and Frank''s "Thank you, goodnight," it''s almost like you have just attended a rare, unbelievable live show. Even though it''s not all recorded live. The runoff track, "Valarie," is sort of an epilogue, the music you exit this imaginary theater to, and your ear for music will have benefitted from it.

Apart from the utter brilliance and originality of numbers like Holiday In Berlin and Igor''s Boogie, this is packed with other stunning pieces too. I don''t think anybody, anywhere, has ever matched Ol'' Frank for the astonishing mix of beauty and originality and quirkiness of many of his compositions, particularly those featuring his guitar solos. Not sure why he added WPLJ and Valarie (two doo-wop songs) to this otherwise instrumental album, But if you skip over those, the rest of this album is endlessly listenable. Though of course if you like FZ''s music, you won''t need me to tell you that. PS This CD arrived almost immediately after I''d sent in my order. This seller is damned fast.

This, the last of the original Mothers'' albums, is a long instrumental ride through the lands of fantasy that does not attempt a definitive system, but finds instead spontaneity and grace of true genius. The centerpiece of the album is the twenty-two minutes of ''Little House I Used to Live In'' featuring some stunning violin playing from Don Sugarcane Harris. ''Burnt Weeny'' is a tour de force of four great soloists (Harris, Preston, Underwood, Zappa) and the rhythm section (the dual battery and Tripp Black). This album is a stylistic masterpiece and ranks as one of Zappas''s greatest achievements. This ought to be included in the all-time top 50 albums lists of all those that consider themselves genuine music fans.
